Obituary for Gary "Dumpy" Frederick Marr

Gary “Dumpy” Frederick Marr passed away on February 8, 2023, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born on November 29, 1945 to parents Harry “Red” Oaten Marr and Thelma Pearl Marr in Saint John, New Brunswick. As a young adult, Gary proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Upon returning to Saint John, he married the love of his life, Linda. For most of his working career, he was employed by the Saint John Drydock. During this time, he was very involved in Local 3 Marine Workers and served many positions including Vice President and President. Representing his union brotherhood was one of his greatest passions. This passion lead him to various places throughout the world, including Scotland, England, and numerous places around North America. After retirement from the drydock, he enjoyed his custodial job at NBCC Saint John.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Linda Marr, his three children, Shelly Alward (Rick), Tracy Adams (Shawn), and Gary Marr, his five grandchildren, Brady Adams (Erica), Brittany Kelly (Aidan), Caitlyn Alward (Bryston), Noah Adams (Maggie), and Emmett Marr, and his four great grandchildren, Wrenley, Aoife, Cian, and Rhett, along with his two siblings Paul Marr (Keri), and Brenda Haig. He was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Red and Thelma Marr, and his sisters Ruth, Eleanor, Gloria, Debbie, Sharon, and brothers Reggie, Doug, Dave, and Eric “Ike”.

When not working, Gary could be found spending time at his happy place, Pocologan, with his wife, children, and later, grandchildren, who all developed the same love for his home away from home. Gary was the life of the party; always making sure everyone was enjoying themselves whether it was hunting, fishing, biking, playing cards with friends, bonfires, playing the harmonica, washer toss games, story telling in the field, or, his grandchildren’s favourite, jumping in the back of the truck and going looking for moose. Being a “Dumpy” to his 5 grandchildren was his greatest joy. Gary was an avid Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A private service followed by an open celebration of life will be held at the Jarvis Bay Legion, 1016 Bayside Drive, Saint John NB, E2J 4A1. The celebration of life will be on Saturday, February 11, 2023 beginning at 3:00 pm.

Arrangements are in the compassionate care of Chipman Funeral Home & Crematorium (506-339-6612). Memories and condolences may be shared through www.chipmanfuneralhome.ca.
